Credential-gated sources that require executor access

The sources below require credentials that only the estate's personal representative (or their authorised attorney) can provide—typically the decedent's Social Security number, letters testamentary, or a death certificate. EstateMarshal never collects SSNs and does not run these searches. They appear as checklist steps in every report.

Search for matured, unclaimed U.S. savings bonds and Treasury securities.

Requires: decedent's SSN.

Locate retirement plan benefits from former employers.

Requires: decedent's SSN and date of birth.

NAIC Life Insurance Policy Locator

Search for life insurance policies and annuity contracts across participating insurers.

Requires: decedent's SSN, date of birth, date of death, and a certified death certificate.

PBGC (Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation)

Search for unclaimed pension benefits from terminated defined-benefit plans.

Requires: decedent's name and SSN.

HUD/FHA mortgage insurance refunds

Search for refunds of upfront mortgage insurance premiums on FHA-insured loans.

Requires: FHA case number or decedent's name.

Social Security lump-sum death payment

A one-time payment of $255 to the surviving spouse or eligible child.

Requires: decedent's SSN; apply via the local Social Security office or by phone.

ssa.gov — Survivors Benefits

VA (Department of Veterans Affairs)

Burial benefits, unpaid benefits due to the estate, and Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) / Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI) proceeds.

Requires: veteran's DD-214, SSN, and death certificate.

va.gov — Survivors

IRS Form 1310 (refund due a deceased taxpayer)

Claim a federal tax refund owed to the decedent for a return already filed or to be filed.

Requires: decedent's SSN, death certificate, and letters testamentary or court appointment.

Unpaid final wages

Wages, commissions, or PTO payouts owed to the decedent by their last employer. Contact the employer's HR or payroll department. If the employer is unresponsive, the state labour department may assist.

Requires: death certificate and letters testamentary or administration; employer's cooperation.
